Meet Our Founders
Derek and Scott are the owners of Solstice Kitchen and Bath, where Derek is the lead designer and Scott manages all project installations. They each bring 20 years of experience in the building and remodeling industry, plus a love of innovative design and craftsmanship. Their long-lasting friendship and professional partnership grew from working together in the construction industry in Baltimore for over 5 years where their understanding of how to get the best results from a home remodel evolved. This led them to establish their own company where they could own the end-to-end design and remodeling process.
Solstice Kitchen and Bath is a genuinely small, local business. Both Derek and Scott live and work in Crofton, they are each married with small children attending local schools, and they have a unique understanding of the region’s homes. Derek and Scott are your neighbors and place great value in the trust they have built in their community as residents and local business owners.
Derek Mahoney
Owner, Lead Designer
Derek grew up as a local resident in Bowie and graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 1994. He then went to Virginia Tech and graduated in 1999 with a major in environmental resource management and a minor in chemistry.
His introduction to the construction and building industry came when he worked with a local Annapolis builder from 2001-2002. This builder constructed houses from the ground up and did major home additions in the Annapolis area, which gave Derek a wide range of experience in home building, carpentry, and structural work.
From there he moved to Baltimore, where he met Scott and they started working together in gutting and rebuilding homes. Like Scott, Derek worked in construction ripping out and rehabbing Baltimore townhomes for about 3 years. He then branched out into kitchen installations and finish carpentry, further honing his experience and craftsman’s skills. Scott Dell
Owner, Lead for Installation and Project Management
Scott’s path to a career in home design and remodeling began several years after graduating from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in 1999. In 2002 he started working in general construction and carpentry in Baltimore. His scope incorporated full gutting and rebuilding of row homes. With three years’ experience in construction under his belt, Scott’s role evolved to specialize in kitchen cabinetry installation, hardwood flooring installation, and finish carpentry.
After working on everything from knocking down walls to additions to finish carpentry work, Scott realized he could provide a better service by owning the entire design and remodeling process end-to-end. In a work environment where every stage of the process was managed separately by different individuals, he was inspired to see a better way to successfully design and implement a project.
